You would rather learn the actual mechanism behind a living process than accept the summary version. Treating a master's as the real starting point of a career, rather than a costly extra, doesn't put you off.
Look elsewhere if…
You expect a bachelor's alone to open specialist biology jobs directly. Most research and technical roles expect a master's or PhD on top of it. If you want a degree that stands alone at the end of four years, engineering or computer science reach paid, specific work faster.

What the first year is really made of
The volume of material, not its difficulty, is the actual shock. Taxonomy, biochemistry, cell processes and physiology all arrive in the same term, each in its own vocabulary, well before any of them connect into one picture. A statistics and genetics strand runs alongside, in a second and more mathematical register. It catches out people who chose biology specifically to leave equations behind. That unexpected mathematics, more than the sheer memorising, is what thins the class by the end of the year.
The catch
A bachelor's alone opens comparatively few of the specifically 'biologist' roles advertised. Most research and specialist laboratory jobs expect a master's or a PhD on top. So the degree works as a foundation rather than a finished qualification. That extra stage costs years most applicants haven't budgeted for.
The one hard requirement
Most programmes assume chemistry alongside biology at school. Biology on its own, with no chemistry at all, is a weak application almost everywhere we cover.
