The guide

Communications

Humanities & Social Sciences

Studying how information, persuasion and stories actually reach and change an audience. Reporting, media theory and practical production together, rather than only the theory of media or only the craft of writing.

This suits you if…

You would rather find out what is actually true and report it accurately than write beautifully about something unverified. You can accept public, sometimes harsh feedback on published work without it stopping you from filing the next piece.

Look elsewhere if…

You want financial stability early in your career. Or you only enjoy the theory side, and dislike being edited in public. Staff roles are fewer than they were, and freelance pay is low and slow. A narrower journalism or marketing qualification reads as more deliberate to an entry-level employer than this broader degree does.

What the first year is really made of

A six-hundred-word deadline arrives within the first fortnight, on a story you have to report yourself rather than summarise from a textbook. Being marked on real, checkable work from week one is closer to an apprenticeship than most humanities subjects attempt. Media theory and media law run alongside the practical work. The ones who leave usually wanted only the theory or only the practice, and resent having to do both at once.

The catch

The economics of the industry this degree points toward have been difficult for two decades. Staff journalism jobs are fewer than they were, and freelance and early content roles pay little and pay slowly. The degree itself is broad, so it competes for entry-level attention against narrower marketing, design or straight journalism qualifications.

Kinds of work this opens

A list, not a prediction. Most people in these jobs did not study exactly this, and most people who study this end up doing something the list does not name.
