This suits you if…
You care more about whether a number is actually true than whether the method that produced it is fashionable. You have the patience to spend most of a project on data that is incomplete or simply wrong, before you model anything at all.
Look elsewhere if…
You pictured building models, and would resent spending most projects cleaning data instead. A straight computer science or statistics degree suits that expectation better, with the applied side learned on the job afterward. This degree is built around the compromise from day one.

What the first year is really made of
Probability, statistics and programming taught in parallel. The messy, incomplete datasets you were promised arrive much later than you expect. The people who leave almost always came for the modelling. What they found was a first year spent proving why a method works, closer to a mathematics degree than the job postings suggested.
The catch
The job most people picture, building clever models, is a small fraction of the actual work. The rest is finding data, discovering it lies, and cleaning it into something a model can use. The specific tools you learn now will be replaced more than once before you retire. The statistics underneath them is the one part that keeps its value.
The one hard requirement
Without genuine comfort in statistics and probability, this major won't click. Every course after the first term assumes it, and no track here lets you avoid it.
