The guide
Finance
Business & Economics
The study of how money is valued, moved and risked. Pricing a company, managing a portfolio, deciding what a future payment is actually worth today.
This suits you if…
You are precise rather than approximate by nature, and comfortable defending a numerical assumption under pressure. You are willing to trade a demanding few early years for the analytical work this degree eventually leads to.
Look elsewhere if…
You want predictable hours early in your career, or steady demand regardless of the economic cycle. This sector cuts junior roles first in a downturn, and treats long entry-level hours as standard. Economics or business management reach adjacent work with a gentler entry.
What this subject actually is

What the first year is really made of
Accounting fundamentals and the mathematics of valuation and interest, taught through problem sets you either get exactly right or clearly wrong. There is little partial credit in a discipline built on numbers matching. Students who leave usually wanted the analytical, decision-making side. They didn't expect how much of the early degree is precise, repetitive calculation before any real judgement is asked of you.
The catch
Entry-level hours in the most sought-after corners of the industry are genuinely long, with evenings and weekends the norm rather than the exception. The field is also cyclical, among the first to cut junior hiring when markets turn. Meanwhile routine analysis is steadily being automated out of the entry-level job altogether.
The one hard requirement
Without fast, accurate, comfortable mathematics, this major is a permanent uphill climb. The entry-level work is measured on exactly that, long before any strategic judgement is asked of you.
