The guide
Mathematics
Natural Sciences
The study of structure, quantity and proof for their own sake. Not applying known formulas, but establishing which statements are actually true, and why.
This suits you if…
You find a two-line proof more satisfying than a page of correct calculation. Not yet knowing which career the degree points toward worries you far less than it would worry most people.
Look elsewhere if…
You want your degree to point at one obvious job on the far side of it. Mathematics gives you almost no professional identity of its own, and leaves the translation into a career entirely to you. Computer science and engineering apply the same reasoning inside a named destination instead.
What this subject actually is

What the first year is really made of
This isn't school mathematics done faster. It's a change of subject. Proof, not calculation, becomes the skill being assessed. A student who was reliably fast and accurate at school can find themselves stuck on a two-line argument that involves no arithmetic at all. For many that is the first time in their life. That experience, arriving after years of being good at the subject, is closer to the real content of the first year than any topic on the syllabus.
The catch
The degree gives almost no direct professional identity of its own. Nobody is hired as 'a mathematician' the way they are hired as an engineer. So every graduate has to translate proof-based training into a field that will actually employ them. That translation is left entirely to you.
The one hard requirement
No track through this degree avoids proof-based reasoning. Suppose you are fast and accurate at calculation, but have never had to construct a rigorous argument. Expect the hardest adjustment of any subject on this list.

A list, not a prediction. Most people in these jobs did not study exactly this, and most people who study this end up doing something the list does not name.
