The guide
Physics
Natural Sciences
Working out the rules that govern matter and energy at every scale, from subatomic particles to galaxies. Then expressing those rules in mathematics precise enough to predict what happens next.
This suits you if…
You want to understand a system from first principles, not borrow a result someone else derived. You are genuinely at ease knowing the mathematics you love may end up applied somewhere other than physics itself.
Look elsewhere if…
You need to see your work matter to somebody immediately. Physics trains you thoroughly, then routes most graduates into finance, data or engineering instead of physics itself. Mathematics and data science name that destination honestly from the start, rather than arriving at it by accident.
What this subject actually is

Physical SciencesThe same subject, under a different department in a different country. Search for all of them.
What the first year is really made of
Almost everyone who enjoyed physics at school is surprised by the first term. Most of it goes on setting the subject's familiar results aside and rebuilding them from mathematical first principles. The language is far more formal than school ever used. Practical sessions exist, but they are a small fraction of the timetable next to problem sheets. It's that rebuilding from scratch, reproving things you already believed, that some people never quite forgive the course for.
The catch
Undergraduate physics trains people for research roles that don't exist in anything like the numbers graduates are produced in. So most physics graduates end up in finance, data or engineering. That work values the mathematics, and never uses most of the physics itself again.
The one hard requirement
Mathematics isn't a supporting subject here. It's half the degree. Without genuine comfort in calculus by the start of term one, physics stops feeling like physics and becomes an ongoing mathematics catch-up.

Where it leads
Kinds of work this opens
A list, not a prediction. Most people in these jobs did not study exactly this, and most people who study this end up doing something the list does not name.
