What the work is actually like

Casework and campaigns in parallel. Individual cases, such as an asylum claim or an eviction or a wrongful detention, involve interviewing people at the worst moment of their lives, assembling evidence, and meeting hard procedural deadlines. Strategic work is slower: choosing which case could change a rule, building a coalition, and writing submissions aimed at a court or a legislature.

The catch

You lose often, and the losses are people rather than accounts. Pay is markedly lower than commercial practice for the same qualification, organisations run on unstable grant funding, and in some countries this work carries genuine political risk. Secondary trauma is a recognised occupational hazard and needs deliberate management.

    Debate, mock trial and any volunteering with people who need help navigating a system. Learn a second language; in refugee and migration work it is often decisive.

  2. What you study

    Law, or politics and then a law conversion where your country allows it. Legal clinics during study are the single most valuable thing available: real clients, supervised, while you are still learning.

  3. How the first years actually go

    Legal-aid or NGO roles, often on short funded contracts, with caseloads heavier than you would like. Many people fund this by starting in commercial practice and moving across, which is a pragmatic route rather than a compromise.
