What the first year is really made of

You are assessed twice for the same lesson. Once on whether the content you taught was correct. Then separately, by a supervisor watching from the back of the room, on whether anyone actually learned it. That second mark is the harder one, and it surprises students who assumed strong subject knowledge would carry them. Placement teaching begins early, often within the first year, well before the theory that explains classroom management has been covered. So you are managing a real room before you feel ready to.

The catch

The workload is heavier than the stable, respected reputation of the profession suggests. Planning, marking and pastoral care routinely extend well past the hours actually in front of a class. Pay, in most of the countries we cover, is modest relative to that responsibility, and to other degrees taking a similar number of years.
