What the work actually is

What the work is actually like

Clinical work is sessions, notes and supervision — an hour with a person, then the writing that records and protects it, then your own supervision to keep your judgement sound. Research and UX work is study design, recruiting participants, running interviews, and coding what people said into something a team can act on. All of it involves far more structured writing than students expect.

The catch

The clinical routes are long and licensed: in most countries an undergraduate psychology degree alone does not let you practise, and the postgraduate places are few and highly competitive. The work itself carries the weight of other people's distress, which is real and cumulative — burnout and vicarious trauma are occupational hazards the profession takes seriously.

What people get wrong about it

That psychology is mostly about understanding people intuitively. It is an empirical science with statistics at its centre, and a large part of training is learning why intuition about behaviour is unreliable and how to test it instead.

A psychology or social-science degree. Reading widely and psychology essay contests are the accessible start.

Stage by stage

While you are still at school
Biology and maths, especially statistics, alongside reading. Any volunteering that puts you around people in difficulty tells you honestly whether the emotional side of this work suits you.
What you study
A psychology or social science degree with real research methods. Then, for clinical practice, a specific postgraduate qualification and supervised hours — look up that ladder for your country early, because it determines everything about the timeline.
How the first years actually go
Assistant psychologist, research assistant, support worker or junior UX researcher — supervised roles with limited autonomy. The licence, not the degree, is what changes what you are allowed to do.

Test it this month

Free, and finishable in a few evenings

Run five careful interviews with people about a decision they made, ask 'why' three times deeper than feels comfortable, and write up the pattern without imposing your own. That discipline is the shared core of therapy, research and UX.
