This suits you if…

You would rather solve somebody else's visual problem well than pursue your own aesthetic uninterrupted. You can explain in words why a layout works, instead of only feeling that it does. Being edited by a client repeatedly doesn't wear down your interest in doing the next brief properly.

Look elsewhere if…

You want your own taste to survive untouched into paid work. Or you assumed a design career runs mostly on personal projects. Commercial work here is edited by clients and constrained by budgets far more than personal portfolios suggest. Fine art keeps the personal authorship this field trades away for paid, briefed work.

What the first year is really made of

The portfolio that got you admitted was entirely your own choice of subject, medium and pace. The first studio brief hands you somebody else's problem, with constraints you didn't set and a deadline that doesn't move. That switch is the actual first lesson, and it usually arrives inside the first fortnight. The students who leave are almost always the ones who wanted to keep making their own work.

The catch

Admission and the early years turn on a portfolio far more than on your transcript. That's a real door for a student with weak grades, and a genuine wall for a student with strong grades and nothing made. Once working, a great deal of the paid output is a client's brand or product, not your own taste. Not everyone who loved making personal work adjusts to that.

The one hard requirement

Almost every programme reviews a portfolio before it reads a transcript, and a strong academic record with nothing made to show for it is a weaker application here than average grades with several finished, considered pieces.
