Designing physical objects that will be manufactured in quantity: how they look, how they are held or used, and how they can actually be produced at a cost that makes sense.
This suits you if…
You are as interested in how a thing would be manufactured fifty at a time as in how it looks. A prototype that breaks on the bench reads to you as information, not as a failure worth abandoning the idea over.
Look elsewhere if…
You want the object to stay exactly as you first imagined it. Manufacturing cost and tooling reshape almost every design before it is made. That's a hard adjustment if you've never priced anything before. Architecture keeps a similar hands-on design process at a larger, slower scale, if that appeals more.

What the first year is really made of
Sketching a hundred concepts in a week turns out to be the easy part. The actual test is the tenth one, built by hand at real size out of card, foam or 3D-printed plastic. You hold it, and it fails to do the one thing it was meant to do. Model-making and materials workshops eat far more of the timetable than drawing does. The students who leave usually pictured a drawing-based subject and found a fabrication-based one.
The catch
A prototype that fails costs time and material. A production run that fails costs a great deal more. So the freedom to follow a personal idea is bounded tightly by what a factory can build at a sane cost. Much of the entry-level work is refining an existing product's manufacturability, rather than inventing a new one.
The one hard requirement
A portfolio comes before the transcript almost everywhere, and unlike a pure art portfolio it is expected to show some evidence you can reason about how a thing is actually made. Sketches alone, with nothing built, read as incomplete here.
