What the work actually is

What the work is actually like

Most of the week is CAD models, tolerance and load calculations, and arguing with a supplier about why the part that arrived is not the part you drew. Then a prototype fails on the bench and you spend two days finding out whether it was the design, the material or the way it was assembled. Engineers here live between a screen and a workshop, and the people who enjoy it are the ones who like the workshop half.

The catch

It is slower than software by an order of magnitude: a change you make this month may not be in a physical product for a year, and a mistake caught late costs real metal. Manufacturing work also follows factories, which means the good jobs are in industrial towns rather than capital cities, and pay in this sector is steady rather than spectacular.

What people get wrong about it

That it is mostly designing exciting new machines. In practice most mechanical work is incremental — making an existing thing cheaper, lighter, quieter or possible to build at scale — and being good at that is what a career is made of.

How you get there

The one-line version

An engineering degree. Start now by building and fixing things: robotics, a design contest, CAD.

Stage by stage

  1. While you are still at school

    Physics and maths seriously, plus anything that puts a tool in your hand: robotics club, fixing bikes or electronics, learning one CAD package (Fusion 360 and FreeCAD are free for students).

  2. What you study

    A mechanical, mechatronics or manufacturing engineering degree — four years heavy on mechanics, thermodynamics, materials and drawing. Expect long lab reports and group design projects; most programmes require an industrial internship, and that internship is usually where your first job comes from.

  3. How the first years actually go

    You start as a junior design or production engineer on one small subsystem — a bracket, a jig, a test rig — not on the whole machine. The first two years are mostly learning how your industry's standards, suppliers and tolerances actually work; the interesting design responsibility arrives after that.
