You would rather be the person providing continuous, hands-on care than the one making an occasional diagnosis. Long, physically demanding shifts don't wear you down the way they wear down most people.
Look elsewhere if…
You pictured diagnosing and directing treatment rather than delivering and coordinating it day to day. That's medicine's role, not nursing's. The two are licensed, trained and paid quite differently everywhere we profile, so look at medicine directly if that is the work you are picturing.

What the first year is really made of
Clinical placement hours begin within the first term at most schools, not after years of classroom preparation. So you are responsible, under close supervision, for real patients while still learning the theory that explains what you are doing. The course has two halves, lecture-based science and supervised ward work, and they are assessed on entirely different criteria. It's usually the ward half, not the academic half, that decides in the first year whether someone stays.
The catch
Clinical placements run on a hospital's rota, not a term timetable. Nights, weekends and long shifts on your feet start well before graduation. The emotional weight of the work, including patients who don't recover, is a routine feature of training rather than an occasional one.
