Stage by stage
While you are still at school
Biology plus mathematics and statistics. Any project where you gather data about a community and present it honestly is a real preview of the work.
What you study
Public health, epidemiology, biology or a social science with strong quantitative training. A master's in public health is the standard entry credential in most systems, often taken after a first degree in something else.
How the first years actually go
Analyst or programme officer in a health ministry, NGO or international agency: surveillance data, monitoring and evaluation, report writing. Field placements early are what make later senior roles credible.
