What the first year is really made of
Weeks of fieldwork alternate with weeks spent entirely at a desk. In the field it is soil samples, water tests and species counts, taken in whatever weather turns up. At the desk it is turning that data into statistics and a written report to a strict format. Most applicants picture the first kind of week and not the second. The class quietly thins once the desk work turns out to be at least as large a share of the mark, and graded just as rigorously.
The catch
Fieldwork is genuinely seasonal and physically demanding: early starts, bad weather, remote sites. A persistent share of the paid work also sits inside monitoring and compliance for the same industries the subject is popularly imagined to challenge. Some graduates find that sits uneasily with why they chose it.
