What the work is actually like

Bench work inside a process. You run assays, formulate or test materials, and document every step to a standard that an inspector could audit years later. In regulated industries — pharmaceuticals, food, forensics — the documentation is not overhead, it is the product: work that is not recorded correctly did not happen.

The catch

The discipline that makes it employable also makes it repetitive: much of the day is following a validated procedure exactly, not improvising, and creative latitude arrives slowly and at senior levels. Lab work also carries real chemical and biological hazards, and shift patterns are common in production environments.

What people get wrong about it

That industry science is a lesser version of academic science. It is a different job: the question is set by a product and a deadline rather than by curiosity, and the reward is that things you work on actually reach people — with the trade that you rarely choose the question.

How you get there

The one-line version

Biology, chemistry or biotechnology. Competitions like iGEM are a genuine early taste.

Stage by stage

  1. While you are still at school

    Chemistry and biology with genuinely careful lab technique — being precise and neat is a graded skill here, not a personality trait. Competitions like iGEM show what applied biology actually involves.

  2. What you study

    Biology, chemistry, biotechnology, food or materials science. Choose programmes with substantial lab hours and, if possible, a placement year; employers in this area hire on demonstrated bench competence.

  3. How the first years actually go

    Laboratory analyst or associate: running established methods, quality control, and learning the regulatory framework of your industry. Progression comes from method development and from understanding the rules well enough to change them safely.

Run any careful, repeatable experiment at home — fermentation, crystal growth, a titration with kitchen chemicals — and keep a proper lab notebook with dates, quantities and deviations. Whether that record-keeping bores or satisfies you is genuinely diagnostic.
