Who this suits, and who it doesn’t

Suits you if EPFL specifically is the target, or if French-speaking Europe is where you want to live and study in English while you learn the language. Look elsewhere if you want a large non-academic job market in the same city, which is Zurich, or if you want a big city at all.

The same Swiss cost wall, and a much smaller job market: outside the campus and a handful of research-led companies, leaving academia here usually means leaving the city.

The way in

Tuition at EPFL is low even for internationals, and a doctoral position is a salaried job. Master's programmes are widely taught in English, which makes it an easier first step than Zurich for someone with no German.

Living there

What living here is actually like

Small, steep and built down to the lake, with the Alps across the water. You can be in a vineyard or on a train to the mountains within half an hour. The campus dominates the city's rhythm in a way it doesn't in Zurich, so student life is more concentrated and easier to enter. It's French-speaking, noticeably more relaxed than the German-speaking side, and small enough that you'll recognise people.

How the money works

The same inversion as the rest of Switzerland: fees are low and living isn't. Rent is below Zurich's but not by enough to change the calculation, and health insurance is compulsory and privately bought, which catches arrivals out because it is a real monthly cost nobody warns you about. A funded doctorate is what turns this from unaffordable into comfortable.Described in shape rather than figures on purpose: rents and salaries move every year and we cannot keep numbers true, but what is expensive and what quietly eats income stays true for far longer.

The language you actually need

EPFL works in English at master's and doctoral level, and much of the campus does day to day. The city outside it is French, and so is the administration: residence permits, insurance, tax. Enough French to handle an office counter is the practical threshold.
