Who this suits, and who it doesn’t

Suits you if your family income is modest and you want Western Europe at a cost the DSU system makes possible, especially in design, architecture or engineering. Look elsewhere if you can't commit to learning Italian, or need to earn quickly after graduating.

What living here is actually like

Milan is the least stereotypically Italian city in Italy: it works, it is businesslike, and it is grey and foggy in winter rather than sunlit. Public transport is excellent and the rest of Europe is a short train ride away. The design and fashion calendar dominates the year, and the city fills and empties around it.

How the money works

The tuition mechanism is the point and it is genuinely unusual: fees at public universities scale to assessed family income, and the DSU regional scholarship can cover fees plus a living grant. The paperwork to prove your family's income is demanding and must be done correctly and early. The students who miss out usually miss on documents, not on merit. The language you actually need

A growing number of degrees, especially at Politecnico and in business, are taught in English. Daily life, internships and most employment run in Italian, and design studios in particular expect it. Assume you'll need it to convert study into work.
