You want your earnings to match what the same degree opens in the private sector, or you want to see the effect of your work. Public-sector pay is modest for the training, and the international-institution roles are extremely competitive to reach.

What the work is actually like

Data, models and memos. You assemble the evidence on a question: what a tax change would do, how a region's labour market is shifting, build or run a model of it, and write it up for people who will decide something. In a ministry or central bank, a large part of the work is the careful, heavily reviewed writing that turns analysis into advice.

The catch

Influence is slow and indirect: you can be right and see nothing change for years, because the decision belongs to politics rather than to evidence. Public-sector pay is modest compared with the private roles the same degree opens, and the good jobs in international institutions are extremely competitive.

What people get wrong about it

That economics is about money. Most of it is about how people and systems respond to incentives and constraints, which is why economists end up working on health, education, transport and climate as much as on markets.

How you get there

  1. While you are still at school

    Maths matters more than most applicants expect. Modern economics is heavily quantitative. Economics olympiads and essay competitions are the accessible proving ground, and reading a central bank's own published reports shows you what the writing actually looks like.

  2. What you study

    An economics degree, ideally with real statistics and econometrics. For research and central-bank work a master's is close to standard, and the mathematical bar for good graduate programmes is high.

  3. How the first years actually go

    Junior analyst in a ministry, bank, regulator or think tank: cleaning data, replicating existing analysis, drafting sections of longer reports. Credibility here is built by being reliably correct in small things.
