The guide

Film, animation & sound

Arts & Design

Telling stories with moving images and sound — directing, editing, animating.

What the work actually is

What the work is actually like

Highly specialised and highly collaborative. On a production you do one job — editing, sound, lighting, one animation department — inside a chain of people, to a schedule. Animation especially is patient, incremental work: seconds of finished footage from days of effort, with revisions coming back from a supervisor who will ask for changes you disagree with.

The catch

The employment model is project-based: you are hired for a production, then it ends. Income is irregular, unpaid or barely-paid work is common at the start, and the industry clusters in a small number of expensive cities. Competition is severe because far more people want to make films than the market will pay for.

What people get wrong about it

That it is about directing. Almost everyone in this industry works in a craft department, and building a career means becoming genuinely excellent at one specific role rather than being generally artistic.

What this kind of work usually offers

Making things · Independence · Working with peopleA generalisation about the sphere, not a promise about a salary. Pay and security vary enormously by country and employer.

How you get there

The one-line version

Film or animation, or just making things. Short-film and animation contests are the real start.

Stage by stage

  1. While you are still at school

Make short things and finish them. A phone is sufficient equipment; the scarce skill is editing, and it is the one most easily practised alone. Enter short-film and animation competitions for the deadline as much as the prize.

  2. What you study

Film or animation school, or self-taught with a reel. What school genuinely provides is equipment, collaborators and the first professional network — weigh the cost against whether you would otherwise find those.

  3. How the first years actually go

Runner, assistant or junior in one department, learning the hierarchy and the equipment. Reputation for reliability moves you up this industry faster than talent alone does.

Free, and finishable in a few evenings

Edit someone else's raw footage into two different two-minute cuts with opposite moods. Discovering how much meaning is made in the edit, not the shoot, is the fastest way to understand this craft.
