What the work actually is

What the work is actually like

Drawings, models and coordination. Early project stages are genuinely creative; the longer middle is technical documentation, building regulations, and resolving how the design meets structure, services and budget. Site visits mean checking that what is being built matches what was drawn, and deciding what to do when it does not.

The catch

Architecture has the longest qualification route of the creative fields — a degree plus supervised practice plus professional examinations, often around seven years before you can call yourself an architect — and the pay through those years is low relative to the training. The studio culture of long hours during study is well documented and continues into some practices.

What people get wrong about it

That architects design buildings from imagination. Most of the work is negotiated: with budgets, planning rules, engineers and clients — and the skill being paid for is producing something good within constraints that were fixed before you arrived.

How you get there

The one-line version

An architecture or interior-design degree. Design and drawing contests are the accessible first taste.

Stage by stage

While you are still at school
Draw constantly, build physical models, and learn to see structure in buildings you pass. Maths and physics matter more than art-school stereotypes suggest, and portfolios are the core of admission.
What you study
An architecture degree, then a required period of practical experience and professional examinations; interior and landscape routes are shorter. Studio is the centre of the degree — expect critique in front of peers as the normal teaching method.
How the first years actually go
Architectural assistant: detail drawings, planning submissions, model-making and coordination. Design responsibility comes gradually and after qualification, so patience is a professional requirement here rather than a virtue.
