What living here is actually like

A small, walkable, hilly old city with a strong café and food culture and an unusually large foreign community for its size. Getting in is administratively easy for many nationalities, which is much of why people are here. Winters are mild, the pace is relaxed, and the creative scene is disproportionately active for the population.

How the money works

Cheap by European standards and expensive by regional ones, and rents in the central districts rose sharply as remote workers arrived. Almost nobody here is optimising a local salary: the economics only work if your income comes from outside, and that is the honest framing of the place.Described in shape rather than figures on purpose: rents and salaries move every year and we cannot keep numbers true, but what is expensive and what quietly eats income stays true for far longer.

The language you actually need

Georgian for daily life, though Russian and English both function widely in the city and in the expatriate economy. You can live here for a long time in English, which is unusual for the region. It's also why integration is easy to postpone indefinitely.
