What living here is actually like

Rainy, direct and unpretentious, with a student population large enough that the city is built around it. Rent, food and transport all cost noticeably less than London, and the north of England and Wales are close for weekends. The trade is scale: fewer employers, fewer direct flights and a smaller professional network than the capital's.

How the money works

International tuition is the same order as the rest of the UK — high, and the real cost of the decision — but living costs are among the lowest of any big British city, which changes the total more than students expect. Scholarships exist and are competitive rather than need-based. Work during term is capped by the hours limit on the student visa, so it supplements a budget and cannot build one.Described in shape rather than figures on purpose: rents and salaries move every year and we cannot keep numbers true, but what is expensive and what quietly eats income stays true for far longer.

The language you actually need

English throughout, which is the country's whole practical advantage, though the local accent is a genuine adjustment for the first weeks even for confident speakers. Academic writing is marked hard, and the standard expected in essays is usually above what students arrive with.
